Rev 3 Quassy Olympic Race Report;; June 4, 2011 Place: 4th O/A; 1st A/G 2:09:57
The race was a tough one no doubt about it. It took me almost a whole week to shake the effects of it. I like to say it's because I left it all on the course! This race came at a great time. I wanted to do an Olympic distance race that was big right before my first focus race of the season, which is an ITU on the 26th of this month. Had a mix of ups and downs in each of the three sports from this race, have a gander:
• The UP in The Swim-I felt great in the water…I feel this partly because of my new strategy of doing a long swim warm-up right before the start and the implementation of my new water drafting techniques. Haha
The Down in The Swim- The swim was a triangle formation with the peak of the triangle being at the far end. Well when I made the turn around the peak knowing it was a triangle and thinking I need to make a sharp turn, I turned too sharp and with my foggy goggles started sighting the buoys I just came from! I swam a good 30-45 seconds back the way I came. I have now made a decision to never swim a triathlon with anything but brand new goggles with the anti-fog still in them. I don’t like the spit in your goggles technique and don’t feel too confident in the baby shampoo in the goggles technique either.
• The UP In The Bike- On the bike I felt solid going up the hills and noticed the hills were where I was able to put some distance on the people around me. My new aero helmet was righteous as well, thanks to my man C. Martin!
The Down in The Bike- I need to get stronger on the flats, I noticed the same people I was pulling away from on the hills, would gain some ground back on the straight-aways. Thankfully this time there weren’t too many straights.
• The Up In The Run- Mentally I felt solid throughout the run. I didn’t ponder too much about how much I had left, just tried to have the mindset of keep pushing. Was happy with the first look at my 10k tri fitness.
The Down In The Run- Not really a down, just a confirmation that I need more speed work. Thankfully I’m running healthy so hopefully I can train more speed now.
Over all it was a fun race and I'm glad I had the chance to do it. Having many of my fellow Bikeway team mates there made it just that much better. Just hope to keep building from here. Next scheduled race is the ITU race on the 26th I mentioned earlier. Wishing everyone all the Best!
