2011 USAT Sprint Nationals in Burlington Vermont August 20
What a race day this was! Great venue and a great day. The Olympic distance started bright and early and my race, the sprint followed at 12:30. A little later than I would have liked. Sitting around all morning waiting and trying not to be nervous! And then of course the heat and sun at noon was about 85 degrees! Oh well. The wind did pick up a little, so down by the water it was a little nicer.
This was the first time I had experienced an in water start. We jumped in before the horn and had to tread water for about 5 minutes til our wave went. Not a bad swim, but not great either, the sun was in my eyes for part of it, but I got through all 750m. As usual I needed to play catch up with all the gals that passed me in the swim. SO I got on it as soon as I got on the bike. Fantastic bike course which was longer than the 20k they said, but I felt like I powered through and passed a lot of people. Smooth transition onto the run course. First quarter mile shows up with a friggin hill straight up, luckily I knew it was there and had practiced on it. But still a killer after pushin it on the bike. After that it was smooth sailing flat and down hill. And not a bad 5k time for the heat of the day.
I tried to pass as many women as possible and finished strong. I ended up in 3rd in my age group which landed me a spot in the 2012 World Championships in New Zealand. Whoo-hoo.
Thank you to Rob, Mike and all the guys at Bikeway for straightening out my P4 before the race!
cheersErica Ruge
