It was a gorgeous day and perfect weather for racing. For me it was the first real test of my fitness. I hadn’t raced since January and had faced a few road bumps with injury and sickness since then. It was great to just to get out there and race.
For those of you who don’t know the race was a 2mile run, 12mile bike and 2mile run. My plan was to be cautious with the first 2miles and just try to hammer the rest from there. I came through the first 2 miles in 10:58 and feeling good. T1 went well , I felt amped going into the ride. The adrenaline quickly faded as I felt the strong beating of a head wind going out. I just kept telling myself the way back was going to be cake and to keep pushing. Well, the way back didn’t feel much better as the head wind did not become a tail wind but more of cross wind. At least now I was able to see the field and where I stood in comparison. It wasn’t too long after the turn around that I saw fellow teammate Adam Ritter riding real strong. A look at him and those around him naturally gave me more motivation to keep pushing.
Towards the end of the ride I started getting my second wind and felt decent going into the last 2mile run. As I was coming into T2 I heard my brother and fellow Bikeway.com teammate Nicky yelling “fast transitions, fast transitions”! He knows this is where I get lax, it was a good reminder to stay sharp. The last 2 miles went pretty smooth and I felt good coming into the finish. Our new Bikeway Kits drew eyes as Team Bikeway.com was just dominating the finish line. Adam Ritter out kicked a Bike Depot athlete for third overall. Sam Train, Janice Brickwood and Dennis Foster all looked real strong crossing the line as well. It was awesome!
Well, just as Spring brings about change in the weather, it has also brought on change in my original racing schedule. Its seems like almost all my original racing plans have now changed. Last night I signed up for the Olympic Rev 3 Quassy and look forward to hopefully lining up with many members of our team and just going after it.
Until then I wish everyone all the best!
