2011 American Zofingen: Erica Ruge RR

I heard the conditions were epic for Mark DeLuccia (SC), Michael Koch (ITT), Colin Martin (LC), Erica Ruge (SC) this past weekend. Below is Erica's account of winning the Women's Short Course.

RAIN+ MUD+FOG = FUN

That was the weather for the 2011 American Zofingen duathlon on Sunday in New Paltz, NY.

Crappy weather!

5 miles of muddy trail run followed by 29 brutal biking miles over Mohonk and Minnewaska in fog and wet roads. Then another 5 miles of even worse muddy trails. But, it was worth it as I held off another women the whole way. She was on my tail the entire race! Every time I went into transition there she was right behind me. On the second run I lost my sneaker in a mud pit and had to stop and fish it out. She almost passed me! I quickly put my mud shoe on and picked up the pace to lose her. I was fortunate enough to finish as the first woman.

Incredible race! I highly recommend it. Even on days like this it is still one of my favorites. Super hard stuff. And, I chose the wimpier race out of the distances. The prize at the end, a super big beer stein which has to be filled immediately. Even for those of us who prefer heed over beer!
