Team member Sam Train is planning to ride the RAGBRAI this summer. If you have an interest in joining him or have any questions, let me or Justin know and we'll pass it along.
From Sam:
I'm going to go ride in the RAGBRAI, or The Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. The local newspaper in Des Moines, IA holds a well organized bike ride of 10,000 people that begins somewhere on Iowa's western boarder and follows a route from west to east a across Iowa, ending somewhere along the eastern border of Iowa. The ride is 7 days long, starting on Sunday when you dip your bike wheels in the Missouri River, then ride around 470 miles to the end, where you dip your wheels in the Mississippi River. You average around 50-70 miles a day, stopping overnight in small and large Iowa towns. The towns that are a "stopover" usually host a lot of fun events. You can camp each night (RAGBRAI transports your stuff for you), stay in a hotel (if available), or have a host family have you stay in their home for the night. Along the way there are all sorts of fun things to do, eat, and drink. I grew up watching the RAGBRAI come through the town where my grandparents lived 3 times. Unfortunately, there is a lottery for week long spots, as there are always more applications than there are available slots. On their website, there are several recommendations of what you can do to get to/from the event. I intend to drive out to Iowa 3 days before the start, and meet my father in the town where my grandfather lives, then we'll complete the drive out to the start. My Dad intends on driving and being an "escort" vehicle. The website is www.ragbrai.com. Entry fee is $150, and if you do not get a slot, they fully refund your money. This is more or less to see if anyone on the team is interested in going, and not so much a team sponsored event. I intend on wearing my team kit for the week regardless. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them.
