See if I can recap the Team Bikeway.com member exploits I know about:
Down at the Blistered Butt road race in Brooklyn, Declan Nicholls tried out the Zipp 808's and put in a great showing. When I asked him about the weekend, here's what he had to say:
Overall the race was not that bad, I decided to see what all the hoopla was about regarding deep dish wheels so I rented the 808s. I have to say they live up to the billing. I really noticed it on all the sections of the course except the hill. The race itself was up and down with attacks here and there, but no one could get away. I decided to take it easy and be conservative as I really didn't want to crash with someone else's wheels on my bike. On the bell lap I was expecting the pace to really pick up all the way until the finish line as it has in the past. It did start out fast but about a mile and a half or so out it slowed down and the entire course from left to right was filled with riders as the pack fanned out. No one wanted to go first and set the pace only to be passed as they approached the line. With the roadway pretty much blocked I found myself back in the group around 25th, not a good spot. If they maintained this pace until about 300 meters out I would be toast. I was completely blocked in and there was no room for me to move up without risking a crash. As we got closer to the line finally someone made a move which caused a reaction by the whole field, now at last an opening. I put those 808s to use and managed to sprint my way up to a 10th place finish.
Great job Declan! Now we know why Cav uses 'em.
Down at Harriman, Woodsy put in a double and came up 4th each day, learning a bunch and getting in some good training. See his race report below.
Over on the duathlon side of things at Harriman on Sunday, Mike Tanzi won the whole thing and Zuri Wilson and Peter Oxenholm also placed well. Good job all!
Also, Caitlin and Colin Martin raced the Mossman in Bridgeport. If you are looking for races to put on your calendar for next year already, Caitlin said it was a great race and well organized. She said the bike consisted of a 5 mile loop and with about 400 competitors, there were always bikers to your left and right. No to mention, the number of spectators definitely fed into the energy of the race. The run consisted of two, three mile loops along the shore and was very scenic. There was a slight breeze coming off the water which was extremely helpful in keeping you cool. Colin placed 29th OA, 5th in his age group, in a time of 2:13, and Caitlin finished 20th in OA Womens, and 3rd in her age group in a time of 2:35. Congrats to both of them!
Justin and I headed up to Ravena, near Albany, for the Capital Region road race. He finished with the front group, placing 9th in the men's Cat 3/4 race. I managed 7th.
We have quite a few events coming up that Team Bikeway.com members will be racing and volunteering for. Hope to see you out there!
