Last two weeks of racing goes like this:
August 1st: For this weekend, I packed up the motorhome, grabbed the dogs and the gf and hit the roads north to Vermont where a beautiful weekend awaited us. Our destination, Essex Junction, VT for Xterra's Race at the Rez. We got up there early on saturday so I could jog the run loop and bike the xc loop. Which worked out well, was able to see what I was up against and also practice all of the technical fast downhills til they were dialed.
Race day came bright and early as usual, and at 8am the countdown began to start the swim. I came out of the 3/4 mile swim aprox 15th place due to a struggle of a swim, buzzed right through T1 and out for the bike. I immediately started sprinting due to the sense of urgency to move up in position. That sprint lasted about a mile into the 3mile 3 loop xc course as I was huffing and puffing and not cleaning all the technical climbs. Loop two and three I settled into my own pace and started making some time. I came off the bike 6th place and left T2 ready to run. As soon as I left transition it was a mtn climb for a mile, then the treacherous descent, and then a mile and a half of flats. I ended up passing one guy on the run taking 5th overall.
I had no real expectations for this day as for results, I always want to win or do as well as possible and I felt good after this race, was a fun weekend and boy those Xterra racers are tough.
August 8th: This weekend was Northern Columbia Country Triathlon, and what a cool race. It is a point to point race with a short swim and a longer than usual bike and run. And it is hilly!! Going into this race I new it was going to be a show down between me and John McGovern, with the possibility of Adam Ritter and a few others trying to be spoilers. Knowing John was coming off of Lake Placid IM gave me a sense of security for my chances of winning today. WRONG!!! My swim went well, I didn't really give up much time to anybody, due to it being a short swim, then I went out and posted the fastest bike split and felt good. Knowing that there was a 1mile hill in the run I wanted to take the first half of the run conservative, since it was a 4.7 mi run. Once I crested the hill I realized I still had legs and started to pick up the pace. I crossed the line first, but then I had to wait to see if I had put enough time on John since we started on separate waves. I needed to beat him by 3 minutes. Two minutes and 8 seconds later he crossed the line to take the win. It was a good race and loved the competition!! Once I get my run dialed in its gonna be a dog fight!!
I capped the race morning off with an amazing breakfast right in Kinderhook where the race finished , with some good friends.
Next weekend I am doing a double header. I will be racing the SBR Tri on saturday and the NYTRI race on sunday. Both races take place in Hariman State Park. Bring on the pain!!
