From Zuri herself:
Saturday I competed in my first duathlon, the Doylestown Du at Lake Nockamixon in Pennsylvania. The 2 hour drive there gave me time to get over being nervous, and I constantly kept thinking about my college coach telling me that being nervous is a waste of energy, and with running a total of 6 miles and biking 18, I knew I was going to have to save as much energy as I possibly could. Upon arrival I set up my transition area; I had a towel that i put my bike shoes and helmet on and set up my bike, that took me about 2 minutes. But I looked around, and saw people strategically placing things in transition. I couldn't help but ask myself, am I really competing in this?
The Women's wave went off at 9:09 and it was freezing. The first 5K went well, I remembered to run conservative, which was critical because i got to transition and got my bike and was off for a 30K trek. It took forever! I'm not a great biker (yet), but I got through it, even while getting a flat within the last mile. Finally the bike was over, and I was happy to finally put my running shoes back on. I left transition and started running my last 5K, but now I was thinking my legs were toast, how am I going to manage this? I caught person after person one by one. The run course was an out and back which made it easier for me to want to catch as many people as possible. I remember one older gentleman saying as he was running the opposite way, "try to catch me!" I got to the turn around and I did eventually catch that guy. I finished the race being the 32nd female and the winning my age group. Happy about completing my first race but embarrassed about my horrible bike time, I left that race knowing that I need to train as a biker, and not so much as a runner, and try to find a happy medium.
